The Booth She Asked to Keep
The waitress wiped away her tears.
Still holding Maya’s hands.
Then Maya looked toward the corner booth.
“The same table…”
“You sat me right there.”
The waitress smiled softly.
“I remember now.”
Maya reached into her purse and placed a small envelope on the counter.
Inside was a framed copy of an old diner receipt.
Across it, in a child’s handwriting, were the words:
“I’ll come back someday.”
The waitress covered her mouth.
“You kept this?”
Maya nodded.
“Every day.”
Then she handed over one final document.
“I bought the building.”
The waitress looked up in shock.
“But the diner will always be yours.”
“One condition.”
“No hungry child ever pays.”
The elderly waitress broke down crying.
Because one free burger had become a promise—
that kindness would be served for generations to come.
