The Only Voice He Remembered
The ballroom remained silent.
The little girl gently wrapped her arms around the horse’s neck.
“I missed you too.”
The wealthy man’s hands began to tremble.
“How… does he know you?”
The girl reached into the pocket of her cream dress and unfolded a faded photograph.
She held it up.
“This was taken the day Grandpa gave him to me.”
The man stared at the picture.
His face lost all color.
“It can’t be…”
An elderly stablemaster stepped forward.
“I remember her.”
“She disappeared after the ranch fire.”
Tears filled the wealthy man’s eyes.
He slowly removed the one-million-dollar check from the display table.
Then quietly tore it in half.
“This was never about the money.”
He looked at the little girl as the horse gently rested its head on her shoulder.
“It was waiting for its family.”
And in the middle of the grand ballroom—
the wild horse no one could tame…
had simply been waiting for the child it loved most.
