The Promise She Kept
The elderly vendor looked at the envelope in disbelief.
“You came back…”
The young woman smiled through her tears.
“I promised I would.”
With trembling hands, the vendor opened the envelope.
Inside were enough savings to retire without worry.
She looked up, speechless.
“I only gave you one meal.”
The woman gently shook her head.
“You gave me hope.”
The old vendor wiped away a tear.
“I never expected anything in return.”
The young woman placed the car keys into her hand.
“No more standing here in the cold.”
Customers nearby quietly watched the reunion.
Some wiped away tears.
The vendor reached across the counter and hugged her tightly.
“Thank you, my child.”
As the evening lights glowed over the little food stall—
they both realized…
the warm meal shared years ago had become a lifetime of gratitude.
