The Truth Arrived Too Late
The sheriff folded the document with shaking hands.
“I never knew.”
The cowboy looked toward the young mother.
“She never had a chance to defend herself.”
An exhausted rider galloped into the square.
“Wait!”
He climbed down and held up a sealed leather pouch.
“We found the real killer.”
The crowd fell silent.
Inside the pouch lay a bloodstained pocket watch.
The sheriff recognized it immediately.
“This belonged to Ethan Briggs.”
The mother covered her mouth, overcome with emotion.
“I told you I was innocent.”
Ashamed, the sheriff removed the rope from the gallows.
Then he faced the townspeople.
“She leaves here a free woman.”
The two little girls wrapped their arms around their mother once again.
The cowboy tipped his hat with a quiet smile.
“Go home.”
As the family walked away together—
the town finally understood…
that justice means nothing if the truth arrives too late.
