The Rider Who Kept His Word
The black horse thundered across the desert.
Dust billowed behind them.
The frightened woman held tightly to the cowboy’s coat, her breathing still unsteady.
After several miles—
the cowboy slowed the horse near a narrow canyon.
He looked back.
The outlaw was gone.
For now.
“You can breathe,” he said quietly.
“We’ve lost him.”
The woman climbed down with trembling legs.
She looked at the cowboy.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I don’t even know your name.”
He gave a small nod.
“Call me Jack.”
She wrapped the blanket tighter around her shoulders.
“He won’t stop.”
“He always comes back.”
Jack’s expression turned serious.
“Who is he?”
The woman lowered her eyes.
“My husband.”
Silence settled over the canyon.
Jack understood everything.
“You weren’t running from a stranger.”
She slowly shook her head.
“I was running for my life.”
Just then—
hoofbeats echoed through the rocks.
Closer.
Faster.
The woman’s face turned pale.
“He found us.”
Jack calmly helped her behind a large boulder.
Then stepped back into the middle of the trail.
His hand rested on the grip of his revolver.
The outlaw rode into the canyon and pulled his horse to a stop.
His eyes locked onto Jack.
“Move.”
Jack never blinked.
His voice was calm.
Cold.
“She isn’t running anymore.”
“She doesn’t have to.”
And in the silence of the desert—
both men knew the next decision would change all three of their lives forever.
