PART 2: The Wolf That Refused to Leave
The storm swallowed every sound except the wind.
Snow whipped violently between the trees while the massive wolf stood motionless over the sleeping boy.
Its breath rose in slow clouds through the frozen air.
One hunter tightened his grip on the rifle.
Another slowly stepped backward.
“Don’t provoke it,” he whispered.
The wolf’s glowing eyes never left them.
Not aggressive.
Not afraid.
Watching.
Measuring.
The little boy stirred softly beneath the pine tree, bundled against the wolf’s thick fur for warmth.
Alive.
Because of it.
A rescuer lowered her lantern slightly, trying to see through the blizzard.
Then she noticed something strange.
The wolf’s side was stained dark beneath the snow.
Blood.
Fresh.
“It’s injured…” she whispered.
The animal shifted instantly at her voice, placing itself more firmly between the hunters and the child.
Protective.
Even wounded.
Lightning flashed faintly behind the storm clouds overhead.
And for one brief second—
the rescuers saw deep claw marks carved across the wolf’s shoulder, as if it had fought something else in the forest before they arrived.
The lead hunter swallowed hard.
“That thing could kill all of us if it wanted.”
But it hadn’t.
Instead, it stayed beside the boy.
Guarding him.
The child slowly opened his eyes.
Weak.
Cold.
Exhausted.
Then he saw the rifles pointed toward the wolf.
“No!” he cried instantly, grabbing the animal’s frozen fur. “Don’t hurt him!”
The wolf lowered its head slightly at the sound of the boy’s voice.
Calm now.
The hunters froze in disbelief.
Because the creature responded to the child like family.
The little boy looked up through tears and snow.
“He kept me warm all night,” he whispered shakily. “Something else was out there in the storm.”
Silence spread through the forest.
The rescuers exchanged uneasy glances.
Then—
from somewhere deeper in the blizzard—
a distant howl echoed back.
Not the wolf beside them.
Something larger.
Something answering from the white darkness beyond the trees.
The massive gray wolf immediately turned toward the sound.
Its entire body stiffened.
Ready again.
Not to attack the hunters—
but to protect the boy one more time.
