but Darlene’s eyes tracked it instantly.
She closed the notebook.

Softly.
Like the decision had already been made long before she arrived at the firing line.
Behind her, someone muttered, “She’s wasting time out there…”
No one responded.
Not because they agreed—
but because something about her stillness made noise feel inappropriate.
Darlene settled behind the rifle.
No dramatic adjustments.
No exaggerated focus.
Just alignment.

Hold.
The desert seemed to stretch further the longer she stayed still, as if the distance itself was listening.
General Carter raised a hand slightly.
“Let’s see it,” he said flatly.
The range went silent.

a single shot cracked across the canyon.
Not loud.
Not chaotic.

Almost restrained.
For a moment, nothing happened.
The heat haze swallowed the target like it always did.
A beat passed.
Then another.
One of the spotters narrowed his eyes.
“…Wait.”
A distant shimmer flickered at the edge of the scope feed.
Then—
the steel target collapsed inward.
Not just hit.
Compromised.
A precise center impact so exact it didn’t just strike the target—it destabilized its mount entirely.
The entire firing line froze.
No cheers.
No movement.
Only disbelief spreading slowly, like it needed permission to exist.
General Carter lowered his binoculars slightly.
For the first time since the test began, his expression changed.
Not shock.
Not excitement.
Recognition.
“…That wasn’t luck,” he said quietly.
Darlene had already stood up.
She didn’t look at the target.
She looked at the wind again.
As if confirming something only she could see.
And then she said, almost casually—
“I adjusted for the wrong assumption you all kept repeating.”
Silence deepened.
Because no one had told her anything.
