PART 2: The Moment He Didn’t Rush
The man stayed seated.
Not because he had time—
but because, for the first time in a long while, he didn’t feel the need to steal it back.
His fingers rested beside the untouched watch on his wrist.
Tick.
Tick.
It was still working.
But it no longer felt louder than the room.
The elderly woman gently pushed the plate a little closer to him.
“No need to finish it fast,” she said softly. “It won’t run away.”
A faint, almost reluctant breath left him—something between a laugh and disbelief.
He picked up another small piece.
Slower this time.
More careful.
Outside the window, the sun dropped lower, turning the diner glass into a warm amber glow.
And for reasons he couldn’t explain, he didn’t think about tomorrow.
Not yet.
Not even for a second.
He just sat there—
in a place he would’ve normally passed through without remembering.
