PART 2: The Last Survivor of Northern Operations
The fluorescent lights hummed softly overhead.
But inside the military training room, nobody moved.
Nobody even breathed loudly anymore.
Rear Admiral Evelyn Shaw stared at Lt. Colonel Mercer in disbelief.
“Classified?” she repeated carefully.
Mercer’s face had gone completely pale.
“Yes, ma’am.”
His eyes remained locked on the silent reservist standing near the back wall.
Like he was staring at someone who shouldn’t exist.
One of the younger officers laughed nervously.
“Wait… you’re serious?”
Mercer turned sharply.
“You weren’t there.”
That ended the laughter instantly.
The reservist still stood calmly with his hands behind his back.
Expressionless.
Almost emotionless.
Rear Admiral Shaw slowly stepped closer.
“Northern Operations was wiped from military archives six years ago.”
The quiet man finally answered.
“Not wiped.”
His voice remained calm.
“Buried.”
A chill moved through the room.
Several senior officers exchanged uneasy looks.
Because everyone had heard whispers about Northern Operations.
An impossible mission near the frozen Karsk border.
A black-site deployment so secret most military records simply labeled it:
DECLINED TO EXIST.
Mercer swallowed hard.
“Forty-seven soldiers went in,” he whispered.
The room stayed silent.
“Only one came back.”
Every eye turned toward the reservist again.
One captain frowned.
“That can’t be true.”
Mercer looked furious.
“You think I’d stand up over a campfire story?”
The captain immediately fell silent.
Rear Admiral Shaw studied the man carefully now.
“If you really survived Northern Operations… then why are you listed as a reserve transfer?”
The reservist’s expression darkened slightly.
“Because dead men don’t officially receive promotions.”
Nobody knew how to respond to that.
Then one lieutenant quietly asked:
“What happened out there?”
For the first time, the room saw emotion flicker across the reservist’s face.
Not fear.
Regret.
Snow.
Fire.
Screaming voices trapped somewhere behind his eyes.
He answered softly:
“We found something we weren’t supposed to.”
Mercer immediately snapped:
“That’s enough.”
The reservist ignored him.
“The mission changed after the signal appeared beneath the ice.”
A few older officers visibly stiffened.
Because now they remembered the rumors.
A buried facility.
Russian territory.
Entire teams vanishing without radio contact.
Rear Admiral Shaw crossed her arms.
“What signal?”
The reservist slowly looked toward the buzzing fluorescent lights above them.
Then answered with one sentence that froze the room completely.
“It wasn’t human.”
Silence.
Pure silence.
Several officers exchanged uncomfortable looks.
One finally scoffed nervously.
“This is insane.”
Then suddenly—
Every light inside the training room shut off.
Darkness swallowed the room instantly.
Emergency red lights flickered on seconds later.
WARNING ALARMS screamed through the military base.
Officers jumped to their feet.
“What the hell is happening?!”
A terrified voice echoed through the base speakers:
“Containment breach detected in Sector Seven.”
Mercer’s face lost all color.
“No…” he whispered.
Rear Admiral Shaw turned sharply.
“You know what this is?”
Mercer looked directly at Iron Ghost.
“Sector Seven was built for one reason only.”
The reservist’s calm expression finally disappeared.
Because somewhere deep beneath the military base…
something from Northern Operations had just awakened again.
