The Truth Inside the Dog Tag
The mall grew silent.
The man carefully turned the gold dog tag over.
His breath caught.
Scratched into the back were the words:
“If found, protect my daughter.”
His hands began to shake.
He looked at the little girl.
“Who gave you this?”
She wiped away her tears.
“My daddy.”
“Mom said to never take it off.”
The woman in the maroon dress suddenly stepped back.
Fear filled her face.
The man recognized it instantly.
“You know what happened to Dany.”
The little girl reached into her backpack.
She pulled out an old photograph.
It showed the man beside Dany.
Smiling.
Arms around each other’s shoulders.
The man stared at it.
A tear rolled down his cheek.
“He was my brother.”
Then he took the little girl’s hand.
His voice steady.
“I couldn’t save him…”
“But I can protect his daughter.”
And as security surrounded the frightened woman—
the little girl realized her father’s final wish had finally come true.
