The Name She Never Forgot
The elderly woman held the warm bread close to her chest.
Her hands still trembled.
The little girl frowned slightly.
Confused.
“You know my name?”
The woman smiled through her tears.
Soft.
Gentle.
“I’ve known it for a long time.”
Clara’s eyes widened.
Before she could answer—
a woman hurried down the sidewalk.
“Clara!”
It was her mother.
She stopped beside them.
Then looked at the homeless woman.
Her face froze.
Color drained from her cheeks.
“No…”
The elderly woman slowly looked up.
Recognition filled her tired eyes.
“You kept your promise.”
Clara looked back and forth between them.
“What promise?”
Her mother knelt beside her.
Voice breaking.
“When I was your age… I was cold and hungry.”
“She shared her last piece of bread with me.”
The sidewalk grew quiet.
The elderly woman smiled faintly.
“I never thought I’d see you again.”
Clara looked down at the bread in the woman’s hands.
Then back at her mother.
A slow smile appeared.
Her mother gently wrapped her arms around the elderly woman.
Holding her tightly.
Through quiet tears, she whispered—
“You fed a little girl years ago.”
“Today… her daughter came back to feed you.”
