The Promise She Made
The father stepped quietly into the room.
He had never seen his son this calm.
The boy refused to let go of the maid’s hand.
“Please… don’t go.”
She smiled softly.
“I’m right here.”
The father cleared his throat.
“How did you do that?”
She looked at the frightened child before answering.
“I didn’t stop his anger.”
“I listened to it.”
The room fell silent.
Just then, the boy reached into his pocket and pulled out a crumpled drawing.
He handed it to the maid.
“This was for my mom.”
Her smile faded.
The father stared at the picture.
His face turned pale.
It had been drawn the morning his wife disappeared.
For years, no one had known the boy had been holding onto that final memory.
The maid gently squeezed his hand.
And at that moment—
they realized the child hadn’t been throwing tantrums.
He had been carrying grief no one had ever helped him put down.
