The Mark on the Sandwich

The elderly baker stared at her in silence.

“You were that little girl?”

She smiled and nodded.

Then she reached into her purse.

Carefully, she unfolded a faded paper slip.

The blue was still visible.

“I kept it all these years.”

The baker’s hands began to tremble.

“I never thought anyone would.”

She placed a folder on the counter.

“The bakery is paid for.”

The two businessmen exchanged stunned glances.

“But there’s one condition.”

The baker looked up.

She smiled through her tears.

“Promise me…”

“…the next hungry child still gets a sandwich with a ‘++’ on top.”

The old baker smiled.

“That promise was never in danger.”
