The Debt of Kindness
The elderly waitress slowly stood.
Her hands trembled.
“Is it… really you?”
The woman smiled and nodded.
“I never forgot that day.”
She placed a small envelope on the counter.
The waitress tried to push it back.
“You don’t owe me anything.”
The woman gently shook her head.
“I owe you everything.”
She looked around the old diner.
Then back at the waitress.
“You fed a little girl everyone else ignored.”
Just then, the front door opened.
A hungry little boy stepped inside, clutching a handful of coins.
The woman smiled softly.
“This time…”
“…let dinner be my treat.”
The waitress’s eyes filled with tears.
Because kindness had finally come home.
