The Boy She Never Forgot
The woman in the cream suit couldn’t stop looking back.
The homeless boy sat against the wall, eating slowly.
Carefully.
As if he wanted the sandwich to last forever.
She turned to her daughter.
“Why did you give him your lunch?”
The little girl smiled.
“Because he looked hungrier than me.”
The answer stayed with the woman.
She walked back to the boy and knelt beside him.
“What’s your name?”
The boy lowered his eyes.
“Ethan.”
“Do you have anyone?”
He quietly shook his head.
“No… it’s just me.”
The woman looked at the nearly finished sandwich.
Then at the frightened little boy.
She stood and held out her hand.
“Come with us.”
Ethan hesitated.
“You’re… not leaving me here?”
The little girl reached over and gently took his hand.
“We don’t leave friends behind.”
Fresh tears filled Ethan’s eyes.
For the first time in a long time—
he smiled.
The three of them walked away together beneath the afternoon sun.
Leaving the cold brick wall behind.
Because one small sandwich had become something far greater than a meal.
It had become the beginning of a place Ethan could finally call home.
