The Promise She Kept
The elderly vendor wiped away her tears.
She looked at the young woman again.
“You were that little girl… weren’t you?”
The woman nodded with a smile.
“I never forgot your kindness.”
She reached into her leather briefcase and placed a folded envelope on the hot dog cart.
The vendor frowned.
“What is this?”
The young woman gently opened it.
Inside was the deed to a brand-new food truck.
Along with the keys.
The elderly woman’s hands began to shake.
“I… I can’t accept this.”
The young woman smiled through tears.
“Yes, you can.”
“When everyone else counted my coins…”
“You counted my hunger.”
The busy sidewalk seemed to fall silent.
People nearby stopped to watch.
The elderly vendor covered her mouth, overcome with emotion.
“You kept your promise.”
The young woman reached across the cart and held her hands.
“You gave me one meal.”
“That meal gave me hope.”
The vendor pulled her into another hug.
Neither of them spoke.
They didn’t have to.
Around them, the city kept moving.
Cars passed.
People hurried by.
But beside that little hot dog stand—
two lives had come full circle.
Because the hot dog the vendor once gave away for free…
had become the greatest investment she ever made.
