The Man Who Paid the Price
The trading post remained silent.
The silver coins rested beneath the young woman’s hand.
Neither of them moved.
Then—
the front door burst open.
A blast of cold wind swept through the room.
A tall cowboy stepped inside.
Snow dusted his hat.
A worn rifle rested across his shoulder.
His eyes moved from the frightened shopkeeper—
to the coins—
to the grizzled man.
“What’s going on here?”
The grizzled man laughed once.
“She thinks that cabin belongs to her.”
The cowboy looked at the young woman.
She stood firm.
Fear hidden behind determination.
“My father paid for it before he died.”
“He never got the deed.”
The cowboy’s expression hardened.
He slowly reached into his coat.
The grizzled man smirked.
“Another buyer?”
Instead—
the cowboy laid a folded document on the counter.
Yellowed with age.
Sealed with an official stamp.
The young woman stared at it.
Hands trembling.
“What is that?”
The cowboy gently slid it toward her.
“Your father’s deed.”
“I’ve been looking for you ever since he asked me to deliver it.”
Silence filled the trading post.
The young woman’s eyes flooded with tears.
The grizzled man’s smile vanished.
The cowboy looked at him one final time.
His voice calm.
Final.
“The cabin was never for sale.”
“It was always hers.”
