The Pie He Never Meant to Buy
The woman watched the cowboy disappear down the dusty street.
The warm pie still rested on the wooden counter.
Untouched.
The next morning—
before the town had fully awakened—
she baked another fresh pie.
Then another.
And another.
She glanced toward the empty road more often than she cared to admit.
Hours passed.
No sign of him.
By late afternoon—
hoofbeats echoed through the quiet town.
The cowboy returned.
His horse stopped beside the pie stand.
He reached into his saddlebag for another stack of money.
Before he could place it on the table—
the woman gently pushed his hand away.
“No.”
He looked at her, surprised.
“I came to buy today’s pies.”
She smiled softly.
“You already did.”
Confusion crossed his face.
“I don’t understand.”
She picked up the warm apple pie she had baked that morning and placed it into his hands.
“This one isn’t for sale.”
He stared at it.
“Then why are you giving it to me?”
The woman met his eyes.
Calm.
Kind.
“Because you don’t have to pay someone just to have a reason to come back.”
The cowboy stood silent.
The wind drifted through the empty street.
For the first time in years—
someone had offered him kindness…
without asking for a single coin.
A small smile finally reached his face.
Real.
Unguarded.
Then he tipped his hat and said quietly—
“Then I’ll still come back tomorrow.”
The woman laughed softly.
“I was hoping you would.”
