The Breakfast They Never Had

Claire held her father tightly.

Neither of them wanted to let go.

The station around them kept moving.

Announcements echoed overhead.

Trains arrived.

People hurried past.

But for them—

time had stopped.

The little girl stepped closer.

Looking up at the elderly man.

“Are you really my grandpa?”

He knelt slowly in front of her.

A tear slipped through his gray beard.

“Yes…”

“If you’ll have me.”

The little girl smiled.

Then wrapped her small arms around his neck.

“I already do.”

Claire wiped away her tears.

“I’ve been looking for you for years.”

The Debt That Set Them Free

The old man lowered his eyes.

“I thought you were better off without me.”

She shook her head.

“We never stopped hoping.”

She reached into her purse and pulled out a small set of house keys.

Placing them gently into his hand.

“You’re not eating breakfast alone anymore.”

“You’re coming home with us.”

The old man’s hands trembled around the keys.

He looked from his daughter—

to his granddaughter—

and smiled through tears.

For the first time in many years,

he wasn’t waiting for the next train.

He was finally going home.
