The Drawing in Her Backpack
The little girl kept hugging the biker.
As if she had known him forever.
The biker smiled through his tears.
Trying to compose himself.
Trying to hide how much the memory hurt.
Then—
the girl’s mother noticed something.
A small photograph sticking out of the biker’s wallet.
It had slipped loose when he reached for the tissue.
The photo showed a young girl.
Smiling.
Holding a stuffed bear.
The mother froze.
Her eyes widening.
“Can I see that?”
The biker looked confused.
But handed her the photograph.
The moment she saw it—
her hand flew to her mouth.
Tears instantly filled her eyes.
The biker’s heart began to race.
“What’s wrong?”
The woman looked from the photo…
to her daughter…
then back to the photo again.
Slowly, she knelt beside her little girl.
Her voice trembling.
“Julie, sweetheart…”
“Can you show him what’s in your backpack?”
The little girl nodded.
Confused.
She unzipped her backpack and pulled out a folded drawing.
Crayon colors covered the page.
A little girl holding hands with a large bear.
Above them were four crooked words:
Me And Daddy Bear
The biker stared at the drawing.
His breathing became uneven.
Then he noticed something written on the back.
A date.
And a name.
The same name as the little girl in his old photograph.
His hands started shaking.
The mother couldn’t hold back her tears anymore.
“After the accident…”
“We were told you died.”
The biker looked at her.
Completely stunned.
The world around him disappeared.
The trucks.
The cars.
The gas station.
Everything.
Then the little girl tugged gently on his vest.
And asked the question that shattered what was left of his heart.
“Mister…”
“Why are you carrying my picture?”
The biker dropped to his knees.
Tears streaming freely now.
Then he opened his arms.
His voice barely a whisper.
Because after all those years—
he finally knew the truth.
“Because I’m Daddy Bear.”
