The rain continued pouring around them.
Neither of them moved.
The man stared at Maria, struggling to understand what he had just heard.
“My daughter?” he asked quietly.
Maria nodded.
Fresh tears rolled down her cheeks.
The man tightened his grip on the umbrella.
“What happened?”
Maria looked away.
For a moment, it seemed as though she wouldn’t answer.
Then she slowly opened her trembling hand.
Inside was a small silver locket.
The man’s eyes widened.
He recognized it immediately.
It belonged to his late wife.
“How did you get that?”
Maria swallowed hard.
“Your daughter found it in your wife’s room.”
The man frowned.
“That doesn’t explain why you’re out here crying.”
Maria’s voice broke.
“Because she accused me of stealing it.”
Thunder rumbled in the distance.
The man’s expression darkened.
“My daughter accused you?”
Maria nodded.
“She called security.”
The rain hammered against the umbrella.
“She told everyone I was a thief.”
The man stood completely still.
For years Maria had worked at the estate.
She had cared for his family.
She had never once been accused of dishonesty.
Then Maria reached into her pocket.
“I tried to explain.”
She held out her phone.
The screen displayed a video.
The man watched.
His jaw tightened.
The footage showed Maria cleaning a guest room earlier that morning.
Then his daughter entered carrying the locket.
Moments later, she secretly slipped it into Maria’s cleaning cart.
The man froze.
The rain seemed to disappear beneath the weight of the moment.
“Why would she do that?”
Maria lowered her eyes.
“I don’t know.”
But even as she spoke, it was clear she suspected something more.
The man replayed the footage.
Again.
And again.
Then he noticed something.
His daughter wasn’t alone.
A second person briefly appeared in the reflection of a mirror.
Someone handing her the locket.
Someone encouraging the setup.
His eyes widened.
“No.”
Maria looked up.
“What is it?”
The man zoomed in on the reflection.
His face turned pale.
Because the person standing beside his daughter wasn’t a stranger.
It was his future son-in-law.
The same man scheduled to marry into the family within weeks.
Thunder cracked across the estate.
The man’s heart pounded.

Then Maria slowly reached into her apron pocket.
“There’s one more thing.”
She handed him an envelope.
The paper was old.
Yellowed with age.
His name was written across the front in familiar handwriting.
The moment he saw it, his breath caught.
It was his late wife’s handwriting.

His hands trembled as he opened it.
Inside was a letter dated only days before her death.
A letter he had never seen.
A letter she had hidden.
As he began reading, the color drained from his face.
Maria watched nervously.
“What does it say?”
The man couldn’t answer.
The final paragraph contained a warning.
A warning about someone close to the family.
Someone she no longer trusted.
And the name written at the bottom was the very same man who appeared beside his daughter in the video.
The storm raged around them.
But suddenly the rain was the least of their problems.
Because the secret his wife had tried to reveal years ago was finally coming to light.
