The Photograph in Her Purse
Mia stood silently.
Her heart pounding.
The elegant woman opened her purse.
And pulled out a photograph.
Old.
Slightly worn.
She placed it on the counter.
Mia looked down.
It was the old man.
Smiling.
Much younger.
Standing beside a little girl.
Mia looked back up.
Confused.
“Who is he?”
The woman’s eyes filled with tears.
“My father.”
Mia froze.
The diner suddenly felt very quiet.
The woman took a shaky breath.
“I’ve been searching for him for three years.”
She looked at the photograph again.
Then smiled sadly.
“He disappeared after my mother died.”
Mia’s eyes widened.
The woman reached into her purse once more.
Pulling out a folded note.
“He left this behind.”
Carefully—
she unfolded it.
One sentence was written inside.
I don’t want to be a burden to anyone.
Mia felt her throat tighten.
The woman wiped away a tear.
“Yesterday was his birthday.”
A painful silence followed.
Then she looked directly at Mia.
“The waitress told me someone gave him a free meal.”
Mia nodded slowly.
The woman smiled through her tears.
“That was the first time he’d accepted help from anyone.”
Mia’s eyes began to water.
The woman reached across the counter.
Taking Mia’s hand.
Then she whispered—
“Because of your kindness…”
“…he finally agreed to come home.”
And suddenly—
the bowl of soup and plate of rice
felt like the most important meal
Mia had ever served.
