The Name on the Receipt
The biker looked at the little girl.
Still holding the crumpled bills.
Still fighting back tears.
He removed his sunglasses slowly.
His voice gentle.
“What’s your mom’s name?”
The little girl sniffled.
Then answered.
“Sarah.”
The biker froze.
His expression changing instantly.
Because twenty years ago—
he had known a Sarah.
A long silence followed.
The biker swallowed hard.
“Do you have a last name?”
The little girl nodded.
Then pulled a folded receipt from her pocket.
“I wrote it here.”
She handed it to him.
The biker unfolded the paper.
His hands began to tremble.
Written in childish handwriting was a name.
Sarah Morgan.
The biker stared at it.
Unable to breathe.
That wasn’t just any Sarah.
It was her.
The woman he hadn’t seen in years.
The little girl looked up.
Confused.
“Do you know her?”
The biker’s eyes filled with tears.
Slowly—
he reached into his wallet.
Pulling out an old photograph.
A young woman smiled at the camera.
The little girl’s eyes widened.
“That’s my mommy.”
The biker closed his eyes.
A tear slipping down his cheek.
Because the child standing before him
wasn’t asking a stranger for help.
She was asking the man
who had never known
he was her father.
