Why He Was Late
The rain continued pouring.
Thunder rolled across the dark sky.
The little girl held tightly onto the biker.
Refusing to let go.
His leather jacket hung around her tiny shoulders.
Warm.
Safe.
Comforting.
For a moment—
nothing else mattered.
Then she looked up.
Her smile slowly faded.
She noticed something.
Blood.
A thin trail of blood running down his forehead.
Her eyes widened.
“Daddy… you’re hurt.”
The biker froze.
He quickly wiped the blood away.
Trying to hide it.
Trying to smile.
But it was too late.
The little girl had already seen it.
Fear filled her eyes.
“What happened?”
The biker looked away.
Toward the road.
Toward the flashing red and blue lights visible through the rain.
Near the entrance of the parking lot.
The little girl followed his gaze.
Confused.
Then—
a police officer stepped out of a patrol car.
Walking toward them.
The officer removed his hat.
Respectfully.
Quietly.
The little girl didn’t understand.
But the adults did.
The officer stopped beside them.
Rain dripping from his uniform.
Then he spoke softly.
“She’s all right.”
The biker nodded.
Relieved.
Finally able to breathe.
The little girl looked between them.
More confused than ever.
“Daddy?”
The officer smiled gently.
Then knelt beside her.
“You know why he was late?”
The girl shook her head.
The officer pointed toward the damaged motorcycle parked near the curb.
Its front wheel bent.
Its headlight shattered.
The little girl gasped.
The biker lowered his eyes.
The officer continued.
“He crashed trying to get here.”
Silence.
The rain seemed to disappear.
The little girl’s eyes filled with tears.
The officer smiled.
“He refused the ambulance.”
The biker sighed.
Embarrassed.
The officer chuckled softly.
“You know what he told us?”
The little girl stared.
Waiting.
The officer looked at the biker.
Then back at her.
His voice filled with emotion.
“He said, ‘My daughter is waiting for me.'”
The little girl burst into tears.
Throwing her arms around him again.
Holding him tighter than before.
The biker wrapped both arms around her.
Protecting her from the storm.
Protecting her from everything.
Then she whispered through her tears—
“You got hurt because of me.”
The biker gently shook his head.
A warm smile appearing on his face.
“No, princess.”
He kissed the top of her wet hair.
Then spoke the words she would never forget.
“I got here because of you.”
The little girl smiled through her tears.
And beneath the pouring rain—
father and daughter stood together.
Because some promises are worth any distance.
Any storm.
And any sacrifice.
