The Pelt That Changed Everything

The merchant stared at the reddish-brown pelt.

For a moment, he forgot about the customers moving through the store.

Forgot about the noise.

Forgot about everything except what was in front of him.

Carefully, he lifted the fur into the light.

His expression grew even more serious.

“Where did you find this?” he asked quietly.

The woman didn’t answer immediately.

She simply folded her arms.

Watching him.

Measuring his reaction.

The merchant swallowed hard.

“This isn’t just rare,” he said.

“I haven’t seen one like it in twenty years.”

Nearby conversations began to fade.

A few customers glanced toward the table.

Curious now.

Interested.

The woman smiled faintly.

“I told you it was worth more than you expected.”

The Debt That Set Them Free

The merchant nodded slowly.

Unable to argue.

He set the pelt down with surprising care.

Like it was something fragile.

Something important.

Then he opened a small lockbox beneath the counter.

Pulling out a stack of bills and several gold coins.

The woman’s eyes widened slightly.

Even she hadn’t expected that much.

The merchant pushed the money across the table.

“That’s my first offer.”

A pause.

Then he added honestly,

“And it’s the highest offer I’ve made all year.”

The woman looked at the money.

Then at the pelt.

Then back at the merchant.

A small smile appeared.

Because for the first time in a long while—

all her hard work had finally been recognized.
