The Road to Safe Ground

The brown horse moved steadily along the dirt road.

Water still dripped from their clothes as the late afternoon sun warmed the air around them.

The woman sat carefully behind the cowboy, the baby wrapped tightly against her chest.

Still shaken.

Still quiet.

The crying had finally stopped.

Only soft breaths remained.

Ahead, a wooden ranch house stood against the open land.

Smoke drifted from the chimney.

Safe.

Still.

The woman looked toward it, exhaustion filling her eyes.

“You really live out here alone?” she asked softly.

The cowboy kept his eyes ahead.

“Mostly.”

A pause.

“But nobody gets left out here if they need help.”

The woman lowered her gaze.

Like she hadn’t heard words like that in a long time.

As they neared the ranch, the horse slowed.

The Debt That Set Them Free

The cowboy climbed down first and turned back toward her.

“Easy,” he said gently.

He carefully helped her down before glancing at the baby.

The child stirred slightly—

safe now.

Warm.

The woman held back tears.

“I don’t even know how to thank you,” she whispered.

The cowboy gave a small shake of his head.

“You can start by getting inside.”

He nodded toward the house.

“Food’s warm. Fire’s lit.”

Then after a short pause, he added quietly—

“And nobody’s gonna hurt you here.”

For the first time since the river—

the woman finally stopped looking over her shoulder.

Because the fear chasing her no longer felt close.

And the ranch ahead no longer looked like a stranger’s home.

It looked like shelter.
