The Homeless Man Was Someone She Never Expected
Destiny stopped in her tracks.
The well-dressed man smiled and extended his hand.
“It’s good to finally meet you.”
She looked confused.
“Do I know you?”
“Not personally,” he replied. “But I’ve known about you for many years.”
The statement immediately caught her attention.
The man opened his leather bag and carefully removed an old envelope.
“Your mother asked me to give this to you when the time was right.”
Destiny’s heart skipped a beat.
“My mother?”
He nodded.
“She trusted me with it before she passed away.”
With trembling hands, Destiny accepted the envelope.
Inside was a photograph and a handwritten letter.
The moment she saw the picture, she froze.
It showed her mother standing beside a smiling man she had never seen before.
“Who is he?” she whispered.
The man in the suit looked at her carefully.
“Your father.”
Destiny’s eyes widened.
Her mother had never spoken about him.
Not once.
She quickly unfolded the letter.
The first line made her breath catch.
“If you’re reading this, then the day has finally come for you to learn the truth.”
Destiny struggled to hold back tears.
“Where is he now?”
The suited man hesitated.
“For many years, nobody knew.”
“Then why are you here?”
“Because this morning we found him.”
Destiny looked up immediately.
“You found my father?”
The man nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
At that exact moment, back inside the diner, the bearded man quietly finished the last bite of breakfast.
The waitress approached to collect the plate.
“Thank you,” he said softly.
She smiled.
“You’re welcome.”
The man reached into his worn coat and pulled out a small silver locket.
“Can I ask you something?”
“Of course.”
He opened the locket.
Inside was a faded picture of a little girl.
The waitress stared at it.
Something about the image felt strangely familiar.
“I’ve been looking for her for twenty years,” the man said.
“She was taken from me when she was very young.”
The waitress looked at him sympathetically.
“I hope you find her.”
The man’s eyes filled with sadness.
“So do I.”
Outside, Destiny’s hands shook.
“Can I see him?”
The suited man looked away.
“You can.”
“Where is he?”
He pointed across the street.
Toward the diner.
Destiny frowned.
“My father is in there?”
“Yes.”
Without another word, she hurried toward the entrance.
Her heart pounded harder with every step.
Inside, the waitress turned and watched as the bearded man stood to leave.
Then the front door suddenly opened.
Destiny stepped inside.
The man glanced toward the entrance.
Everything stopped.
The locket slipped from his hand and hit the floor.
His eyes widened.
Destiny stared back at him.
The resemblance was impossible to ignore.
The waitress looked from one to the other in shock.
The bearded man’s voice cracked.
“Destiny…?”
Tears instantly filled her eyes.
“How do you know my name?”
The man could barely speak.
Because after twenty years of searching, the daughter he thought he had lost forever was standing right in front of him.
