The elegant woman’s hands began to shake.

The child wiped her tears.
“Anna.”
The name hit the woman like lightning.
“Anna…”
Her younger sister.
The sister everyone believed had died years ago.
The little girl reached into her torn dress and carefully unfolded a worn letter.
“She told me to give you this.”
With trembling fingers, the woman opened it.
The handwriting made her cry before she could even read the first sentence.

A sob escaped her lips.
The letter slipped from her hands.
The little girl stepped back nervously.
“I can leave if you want.”
Those words shattered what remained of Sophia’s heart.
“No.”
She rushed forward and dropped to her knees.
“No, sweetheart.”
Wrapping her arms around the frightened child, she held her tightly as tears soaked the girl’s tangled hair.
“You’re not leaving.”
The little girl began crying too.
“Really?”
Sophia kissed her forehead.
“Really.”
