The Name That Made the Biker Drop His Coffee Cup
The little girl tilted her head and smiled softly.
“My mommy’s name is Emily Carter.”
The coffee cup slipped from the old biker’s hand.
It shattered across the floor.
Every biker at the table froze.
Color drained from the gray-bearded man’s face as memories crashed into him all at once.
Emily Carter.
A name he hadn’t heard in twenty years.
His voice trembled.
“Emily…?”
The little girl nodded happily.
“She said you would know her.”
The other bikers exchanged stunned glances.
Nobody had spoken that name around Jack Mercer since the day Emily disappeared from their lives.
Jack slowly rose from the booth, unable to take his eyes off the child standing in front of him.
“Sweetheart…” he whispered. “How old are you?”
“Seven.”
The answer hit him like a punch.
Seven years.
Exactly seven years.
His breathing became uneven.
Then the girl reached into her pink hoodie and pulled out an old photograph.
Carefully, she handed it to him.
Jack stared.
His hands began to shake.
Because the picture showed a younger Emily—
Standing beside him.
Both of them smiling.
And written on the back, in Emily’s handwriting, were five simple words.
Find your way back home.
Tears filled Jack’s eyes.
Around the diner, nobody spoke.
The little girl looked up at him nervously.
“My mommy is sick,” she whispered.
“And she said I had to find you before it was too late.”
The entire diner fell silent.
And for the first time in decades—
Jack Mercer looked truly afraid.
