The Boy Whose Darkness Woke the Beast

The frozen lake groaned beneath them.

Ice cracked farther outward.

Long black fractures stretching across silver moonlight like something beneath the world had begun breathing again.

The hunters stepped backward.

Slowly.

Uneasily.

No one laughed now.

No one reached for courage.

Because standing before them—

the dying beast had risen.

Changed.

Its black fur shimmered unnaturally beneath drifting snow.

Orange eyes burned brighter than torchfire.

Ancient symbols glowed beneath massive paws.

Alive.

Watching.

The boy remained still behind it.

Silent.

His blackened veins crawled higher across pale skin.

Twisting like shadows beneath flesh.

The Debt That Set Them Free

His eyes—

completely dark.

Bottomless.

The cold itself seemed to lean away from him.

One hunter tightened trembling fingers around his sword.

Voice shaking now.

“You…”

He swallowed hard.

“What are you?”

The boy slowly looked up.

Snow drifted against stillness.

Against silence.

Against something older than fear.

His voice came quietly.

Wrong somehow.

Like more than one voice answered at once.

“I stayed buried.”

The forest darkened.

Torches flickered violently.

The hunters exchanged frightened looks.

The Fall That Changed Everything

Then—

the oldest among them suddenly froze.

Recognition shattered across his face.

“No…”

He stumbled backward.

Sword slipping slightly from shaking fingers.

“The cursed bloodline…”

The wolf growled.

Deep.

Ancient.

Protective.

Its enormous paw struck the frozen lake.

Ice exploded outward.

The hunters crashed backward into snow.

Torches vanished into darkness.

Wind screamed through the trees.

Then—

from the burning forest behind them—

more shapes appeared.

Massive.

Silent.

Eyes glowing amber between smoke and drifting ash.

Wolves.

Dozens of them.

Larger than ordinary beasts.

Older.

Watching.

Waiting.

The giant black wolf stepped forward.

Snow trembling beneath impossible weight.

The boy walked beside it now.

Small.

Silent.

Terrifying.

One hunter dropped to his knees instantly.

Voice breaking.

“Please…”

“We didn’t know…”

The boy stopped.

Black eyes studying him.

No anger.

No mercy.

Only memory.

“You hunted what protected this forest.”

The wind stopped.

Completely.

Even the snowfall froze in place.

Then—

the giant wolf lowered its head beside the boy.

Orange eyes burning into the trembling men.

And softly—

almost gently—

the boy whispered,

“Now the forest remembers your names.”

Somewhere deep beneath the frozen lake—

something enormous moved.

The ice cracked wider.

And far below—

something ancient opened its eyes.
