Rex Refused to Leave the Sergeant Behind

Snow continued falling through the pine forest.

Soft.

Endless.

Golden light faded slowly behind the mountains as cold settled deeper between the trees.

The wounded police sergeant struggled to stay conscious.

Every breath felt weaker.

Heavier.

Blood darkened the snow beneath his tactical gear.

Beside him—

Rex never moved.

The German Shepherd stood watch like the forest itself had given him one job.

Protect him.

No matter what.

The police radio crackled again.

Louder this time.

“Unit 7, respond!”

Static burst through the frozen air.

The sergeant reached weakly—

fingers trembling.

Too weak.

The Debt That Set Them Free

He couldn’t hold it.

The radio slipped from his hand.

Pain crossed his bruised face.

“No…”

Rex stepped closer instantly.

Ears alert.

Watching.

Waiting.

The sergeant swallowed hard.

Voice barely above a whisper.

“Rex…”

His breathing shook.

“…bring it.”

The dog tilted his head once.

Understanding.

Immediately—

Rex lowered his mouth carefully around the radio.

Gentle.

Precise.

He placed it against the sergeant’s chest.

The Fall That Changed Everything

The officer almost laughed despite the pain.

“Smart dog…”

Weak fingers pressed the button.

Static hissed.

Then—

broken words.

“U-Unit 7…”

His voice cracked badly.

“…officer down.”

Silence.

Then suddenly—

the dispatcher’s voice changed instantly.

Sharp.

Urgent.

“Officer down!”

More voices erupted through the radio.

“We have your location!”

“Stay with us!”

“Search team inbound!”

The sergeant leaned back against the log.

Exhausted.

Relieved.

But then—

Rex growled.

Low.

Deep.

Wrong.

The officer’s weak smile disappeared.

Slowly—

painfully—

he lifted his head.

Snow moved strangely through the trees ahead.

Not wind.

Movement.

A shadow.

Large.

Watching.

Then another.

Wolves.

Three of them.

Thin.

Hungry.

Silent against the snow.

Golden eyes fixed directly on the wounded man.

Rex stepped forward instantly.

Positioning himself between the wolves and his partner.

Protective.

Unshaken.

Snow settled across his fur.

The lead wolf moved closer.

Slow.

Careful.

Testing.

The sergeant tried reaching for his sidearm.

Too weak.

His hand barely moved.

“Rex…”

Fear entered his voice for the first time.

But the German Shepherd never looked back.

Didn’t retreat.

Didn’t hesitate.

Instead—

he stepped farther into the snow.

Standing alone between danger and the man who raised him.

A low bark echoed through the forest.

Warning.

The wolves stopped.

Watching him now.

Because somehow—

this wasn’t prey anymore.

This was territory.

And Rex had chosen to fight for it.

Far beyond the trees—

faintly—

sirens echoed through the mountains.

But they were still too far away.

And night was coming fast.
