PART 2: The Patch Belonged to the Brother They Buried

Thunder shook the biker bar hard enough to rattle the whiskey bottles behind the counter.

But nobody moved.

Mateo stared at the faded patch in his trembling hand like it had crawled out of a grave.

His brother’s road name was still barely visible beneath the worn stitching.

Ghost.

Dead twelve years.

Or so everyone believed.

The little girl stood frozen in front of him, soaked from the Arizona storm, tiny shoulders shaking beneath the thin nightgown.

“My mommy said you would know it,” she whispered.

Mateo slowly looked up at her.

For the first time, he noticed her eyes.

Same gray-blue color as his brother’s.

His breathing faltered.

Across the bar, chairs scraped softly as hardened bikers exchanged stunned glances.

One finally muttered under his breath,

“No damn way…”

Mateo swallowed hard before speaking.

“Where’s your mother now?”

The little girl’s lip trembled instantly.

Tears filled her eyes.

The Debt That Set Them Free

“She told me to run,” Lily whispered. “The bad men found us.”

Silence crashed over the room.

Then the child reached carefully into the pocket of her soaked gown and pulled out something else.

A photograph.

Mateo took it slowly.

The picture showed his brother alive—

Older.

Bearded.

One arm wrapped protectively around Lily and her mother.

And standing behind them in the shadows—

Was a man Mateo recognized immediately.

The same man who attended his brother’s funeral.
