PART 2: The Mountain Man Had Been Waiting for This Night

The cabin went silent.

Only the storm screamed outside.

One knock.

Then another.

Harder.

Heavy enough to shake snow from the roof.

The young woman froze instantly.

Fear drained the color from her face.

Her hand gripped the mountain man’s arm.

“No…”

Her voice cracked.

“He found me.”

The rugged man didn’t move.

Didn’t panic.

His scarred hand slowly reached for the rifle resting beside the fireplace.

Calm.

Controlled.

Like he had expected this.

Outside—

a horse snorted against the storm.

The Debt That Set Them Free

Boots crunched through heavy snow.

Then—

another knock.

Violent this time.

“Open the damn door!”

The woman staggered backward.

Shaking.

Tears rising instantly.

“That’s him…”

The mountain man glanced toward her.

Blue eyes steady.

Unshaken.

Then quietly—

firm enough to stop her fear for a moment—

“Lock that back room.”

She shook her head violently.

“No, he’ll kill you—”

“He won’t.”

His jaw tightened.

Something colder moved through his expression now.

The Fall That Changed Everything

Something dangerous.

Because fear wasn’t what sat behind those eyes.

Recognition.

Slowly—

he stepped toward the door.

Rifle resting loosely in one hand.

The fire crackled behind him.

Wind screamed louder.

Then came the voice again.

Angrier now.

“I know she’s in there!”

The mountain man stopped inches from the door.

Silent.

Listening.

Then—

very calmly—

he unlocked it.

The door creaked open.

Snow exploded inward with freezing wind.

Standing outside—

was a broad man on horseback.

Dark coat soaked white.

Heavy beard.

Cruel eyes.

A revolver resting openly at his side.

The stranger looked past him instantly.

Searching.

Hungry.

“Move,” he snapped.

“She belongs to me.”

The mountain man said nothing.

Only stood there.

Blocking the doorway completely.

The storm howled between them.

Finally—

the stranger frowned.

“…you deaf?”

The mountain man tilted his head slightly.

Voice quiet.

Cold.

“No.”

Silence.

Then—

he looked directly into the man’s eyes.

“She stopped belonging to you the day you touched her.”

Something shifted.

Dangerous.

The stranger laughed once.

Short.

Ugly.

“You got no idea who you’re talking to.”

The mountain man nodded slowly.

“Actually…”

His grip tightened on the rifle.

“…I remember exactly who you are.”

The cruel man froze.

Just for a second.

Recognition flickering across his face.

“No…”

He leaned closer.

Disbelief spreading.

“You died.”

The mountain man stepped into the storm.

Snow gathering across his shoulders.

Expression unreadable.

“Almost.”

The woman stared from inside the cabin.

Heart pounding.

Confused.

Because somehow—

they knew each other.

Then—

the cruel man’s face slowly drained of color.

Because twelve years ago—

he helped bury a man in the mountains.

A man who was never supposed to crawl back out.

And judging by the scar—

this was him.
