PART 2 — The Bus Stop Promise
Officer Caleb Foster didn’t speak right away.
The humid Georgia air suddenly felt heavier around the lonely roadside bus stop.
The little girl sat quietly beside him clutching her worn teddy bear, tiny shoes dangling above the cracked pavement beneath the flickering streetlight.
Cars rushed past in the darkness.
Nobody stopped.
“Sweetheart…” Caleb said carefully, kneeling beside her. “What’s your grandfather’s name?”
The girl looked down at the teddy bear.
“Walter.”
“And where does he live?”
A pause.
Then something in her expression changed.
Confusion.
Small.
Almost invisible.
“He said we couldn’t go back there anymore.”
Caleb’s stomach tightened.
Rain clouds rolled slowly across the distant sky while police radio static whispered softly from inside the cruiser.
Then the little girl reached into her coat pocket.
Carefully—
she pulled out a folded receipt.
Old.
Wrinkled.
Grease-stained.
Caleb opened it beneath the cruiser headlights.
His expression changed instantly.
At the very top—
a motel address.
And underneath it, written shakily in blue ink:
“WAIT HERE. DON’T FOLLOW ME.”
The officer stared silently at the words.
Then lower on the paper—
another line.
One that made his chest tighten.
“I’m sorry.”
The little girl looked up at him nervously.
“Is Grandpa coming back now?”
Caleb couldn’t answer immediately.
Because for the first time that night—
he realized the old man may not have abandoned her out of cruelty.
He may have believed leaving her behind was the only way to save her from whatever was chasing them.
