PART 2: The Pendant Beneath the Mud
The cold wind stopped feeling cold.
The entire courtyard froze in silence beneath the shadow of the castle walls.
The nobleman stared at the silver pendant swinging gently against the boy’s torn tunic.
Two skulls facing inward.
Silver leaves surrounding them like a royal crest long buried by history.
His breathing suddenly became uneven.
“No…” he whispered.
The black hunting dog stopped growling instantly.
Even the horse shifted nervously beneath him.
The villagers exchanged frightened looks.
Because they recognized the symbol too.
Not from stories.
From fear.
The nobleman slowly dismounted from his horse, boots sinking into the mud as he approached the kneeling child carefully now—
almost cautiously.
Close-up—
his armored glove trembled slightly.
“Where did you get that pendant?” he demanded quietly.
The boy slowly lifted frightened eyes.
“It belonged to my mother.”
A ripple of panic spread through the villagers.
One old woman covered her mouth instantly.
Another man stepped backward like he had seen a ghost.
The nobleman’s face tightened.
“That crest burned twenty years ago,” he muttered.
The boy frowned in confusion.
Before he could answer—
an older guard near the castle gate suddenly dropped his spear onto the stone road.
Clang.
Every eye turned toward him.
The old guard stared directly at the pendant with horror in his eyes.
“…That’s the royal death seal.”
Silence crashed across the courtyard.
The nobleman slowly looked back at the boy.
Not with anger anymore.
But with something far more dangerous.
Recognition.
Then the old guard whispered the words nobody in the kingdom had spoken for decades:
“The last child of House Varek survived.”
