PART 2: The Little Girl Knew Something About the Dead Man

Rain fell harder across the cemetery as the little girl searched desperately through the mud for the crushed white flower.

Nobody moved to help her.

Not at first.

The widow stood rigid beside the coffin, breathing unevenly as if the child’s presence alone threatened something carefully buried long before today.

Then the girl finally found the flower.

Crushed.

Covered in mud.

But she still held it carefully against her chest.

“My mother said he would recognize it,” she whispered through tears.

A murmur spread through the mourners.

The priest frowned slightly. “Recognize… a flower?”

The girl nodded weakly.

Then, with shaking fingers, she untied a tiny faded ribbon wrapped around the stem.

Something fell into her palm.

A ring.

Silver.

Old.

The widow’s face drained of color instantly.

Several mourners gasped quietly as the girl lifted the ring toward the coffin.

“My mom said he gave this to her before he disappeared.”

The Debt That Set Them Free

Thunder cracked above the cemetery.

The widow stumbled backward.

And for the first time since the funeral began—

Fear replaced anger in her eyes.
