PART 2: The Wolf Recognized the Child They Tried to Erase

The frozen settlement stood completely still.

Even the bitter wind felt quieter now.

The colossal gray wolf remained lowered beside the trembling child, its scarred body towering over him like a living wall between the boy and the rest of the camp.

Nobody moved.

Nobody dared.

The child stared at the creature in disbelief.

His tiny fingers trembled harder around the freezing air where the broken wooden carving had slipped from his hands.

The wolf’s glowing eyes never left him.

Not threatening.

Protective.

Familiar.

Like this wasn’t the first time it had searched for him.

The gray-bearded elder near the fire stumbled backward.

Fear spread visibly across his weathered face.

“No…” he whispered again. “It cannot be.”

One warrior gripped his axe tighter.

“What are you talking about?”

The elder pointed shakily toward the child.

“That mark,” he muttered. “That carving…”

The boy froze.

The Debt That Set Them Free

Instinctively, he pulled the torn fabric of his tunic tighter around himself.

Used to hiding.

Used to being ashamed.

The warriors exchanged uncertain looks.

The mocking laughter from moments earlier felt impossible now.

Because no one in the settlement had ever seen the beast kneel.

Not once.

The lead warrior stepped cautiously closer.

“What bloodline?” he asked.

The elder’s voice lowered.

Heavy.

Uneasy.

“The First Keepers.”

Silence spread instantly.

Even the crackling torchfire seemed quieter.

One younger warrior frowned.

“Those are children’s stories.”

The elder turned sharply toward him.

“No.”

His eyes drifted toward the wolf.

The Fall That Changed Everything

Terrified.

“They walked beside beasts before kingdoms existed.”

The giant wolf suddenly shifted.

Its massive body moved slightly—

placing itself fully between the child and the warriors.

A warning.

Subtle.

But unmistakable.

The child swallowed nervously.

“I didn’t do anything,” he whispered quietly.

The wolf lowered its enormous head toward him again.

A soft rumbling sound escaped its chest.

Comforting.

Protective.

The boy hesitated.

Then slowly—

carefully—

he placed one trembling hand against the creature’s scarred fur.

Warm.

Alive.

Real.

The giant wolf closed its eyes briefly.

The elder went pale.

“Oh gods…” he whispered.

The lead warrior looked uneasy now.

“What?”

The elder swallowed hard.

“The beasts only bond once.”

A pause.

Cold fear settled across the camp.

“And only with the rightful heir.”

The settlement erupted into nervous whispers.

Impossible.

Dangerous whispers.

Because everyone there knew something terrifying—

Years ago…

The bloodline had been hunted.

Burned.

Destroyed.

Or so they believed.

Then suddenly—

a loud horn echoed through the frozen fog near the gates.

Deep.

Urgent.

Warriors turned instantly.

Heavy footsteps approached through the mist.

Fast.

Armed.

One guard came running into camp, breathing hard.

His face drained of color.

“There are riders coming!”

The lead warrior frowned.

“How many?”

The guard hesitated.

Then answered shakily—

“…Too many.”

The giant wolf slowly rose to full height.

Its glowing eyes turned toward the fog.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then somewhere beyond the frozen gates—

another howl echoed.

Then another.

And another.

The warriors looked toward the endless mist surrounding the settlement.

Because suddenly—

they realized the giant wolf hadn’t come alone.

Something ancient had just returned.

And it had come for the child.
