One of the house staff rushed forward and caught him before he collapsed.

“When did you last eat?”

The boy looked embarrassed.
“I’m okay.”

The grandfather slowly knelt in front of him.
“What’s your name, son?”
“Eli.”
“And where are your parents?”
The little boy’s lips trembled.
“My mom works nights.”
A pause.
“My stepdad gets angry when I come home early.”
Heavy silence spread across the pool party.
The grandfather looked around at the expensive champagne glasses, luxury watches, and million-dollar smiles surrounding him.
And for the first time that night—
none of it mattered.
Because a starving child with bruises on his arms had shown more courage than everyone at the party combined.
Then the little girl reached out from her wheelchair and gently took Eli’s hand.
“He stayed with me when everyone else screamed.”
