PART 2: The Voice on the Radio Knew His Name
Smoke flooded the canyon while terrified soldiers stumbled toward cover beneath relentless gunfire echoing from the cliffs above.
Bullets shattered rock all around them.
Men screamed over the comms.
Dust swallowed the valley.
But Eli Mercer stayed frighteningly calm.
While everyone else reacted to the chaos…
he kept studying the pattern.
His eyes moved constantly across the ridgelines.
Tracking angles.
Movement.
Timing.
Then suddenly—
He froze.
“They’re herding us.”
Sergeant Cole looked at him sharply.
“What?”
Eli pointed toward the canyon exit ahead.
“Look at the gunfire.”
Another burst ripped across the rocks beside them.
Not random.
Controlled.
The enemy wasn’t trying to kill them immediately.
They were steering them somewhere.
Cole’s face slowly changed.
“Kill zone…”
Eli nodded once.
“If we keep moving forward, we’re dead.”
A terrified private shouted through the smoke:
“So what do we do?!”
Eli scanned the canyon walls one more time.
Then pointed toward a narrow rock formation partially buried beneath sand.
“There.”
Cole frowned.
“That’s solid stone.”
“No,” Eli answered quietly.
“It’s covering something.”
Without waiting for permission, Eli sprinted through the gunfire toward the cliffside.
Bullets slammed around him as soldiers screamed for him to get down.
But Eli ignored all of it.
Because now he saw the pattern clearly.
The hidden cracks.
The airflow.
The shape beneath the dust.
Tunnel entrance.
Old.
Buried.
Military.
Eli grabbed a fallen grenade from the ground.
Pulled the pin.
Boom.
Rock exploded outward.
A hidden tunnel entrance appeared beneath the canyon wall.
The squad stared in disbelief.
“How the hell did you know that was there?” Cole shouted.
Eli hesitated.
Too long.
Then answered softly:
“Because I’ve seen this valley before.”
Before Cole could ask what he meant—
The radio suddenly crackled.
Static filled the canyon.
Then a voice spoke calmly through every headset.
Cold.
Controlled.
“…Iron Feather.”
Every soldier froze instantly.
Cole slowly turned toward Eli.
“What did he call you?”
Eli’s face lost all color.
The mysterious voice continued through the comms:
“You disappeared for a long time.”
Gunfire above suddenly stopped.
Complete silence swallowed the canyon.
Even the enemy shooters weren’t firing anymore.
Like they were waiting.
Listening.
The voice returned.
“We finally found you.”
One terrified soldier whispered:
“Who the hell is that?”
Nobody answered.
Because Eli was staring at the radio like he recognized the voice.
Like he feared it.
Cole stepped closer slowly.
“Eli…”
The young private’s breathing had changed now.
Uneven.
Shaken.
For the first time since the ambush began—
he looked scared.
Then deep inside the hidden tunnel…
lights suddenly flickered on.
Old military floodlights buried beneath the canyon walls.
Dust drifted from the ceiling as power hummed through underground corridors untouched for years.
The soldiers stared into the darkness in horror.
Because someone had activated the bunker from inside.
And then—
Through the tunnel speakers beneath the earth…
the same voice echoed again.
“Welcome back, Subject Feather.”
