The brass key sat between them beneath the flickering diner light.
ROOM 12.
The biker stared at it without blinking, his scarred fingers slowly tightening against the edge of the table.
Around the café, nobody moved.
Not the waitress.
Not the truckers near the window.
Even the ceiling fan seemed louder now.
The little girl finally lifted her eyes slightly, just enough for him to see the fear inside them.
“They said nobody would look there,” she whispered.
The biker picked up the key carefully.
Old brass.
Worn edges.
Sunset Trails Motel.
Three miles west down Route 66.
His jaw hardened instantly.
Because he knew that motel.
Knew the kind of men who rented rooms there by the hour and paid cash to avoid questions.
“What’s your name, kid?” he asked quietly.
“Emma.”
“How long were you in Room 12?”
Emma’s fingers trembled around the untouched lemonade.
“I don’t know.”
The answer hollowed the room.
Outside, desert heat shimmered above the empty highway while a distant motorcycle engine slowly approached the café.
The biker noticed immediately.
So did Emma.
Her face drained of color.
“He found me,” she whispered.
The engine grew louder.
Closer.
Then stopped outside.
Boots hit gravel.
Heavy.
Unhurried.
The diner door creaked open beneath the buzzing neon sign.
A tall man stepped inside wearing mirrored sunglasses and a black denim jacket despite the brutal heat outside.
The moment Emma saw him, she froze completely.
The biker leaned back slowly in the booth, placing the motel key into his vest pocket.
The man smiled faintly.
“There you are.”
The biker’s voice stayed calm enough to make the entire café nervous.
“She’s not going anywhere.”
The man’s smile disappeared.
Then his eyes dropped toward the brass key now hidden inside the biker’s vest.
And suddenly the silence inside the roadside café became dangerous.
