PART 2: The Soldier Who Saw the Pattern
Smoke flooded the canyon.
Gunfire thundered across the cliffs while Eli Mercer pulled two wounded soldiers behind a shattered rock formation.
The squad’s breathing had turned ragged.
Panicked.
But Eli stayed terrifyingly calm.
Bullets slammed into stone inches above their heads as Sergeant Cole finally looked at him differently for the first time.
Not like a weak recruit.
Like someone dangerous.
“How did you know?” Cole shouted over the gunfire.
Eli kept scanning the canyon walls.
“The silence.”
Cole frowned.
“What?”
“No civilians. No animals. No wind movement near the ridge.”
Another burst of gunfire ripped overhead.
Eli pointed toward the canyon entrance.
“They wanted us deeper before triggering the second line.”
The squad slowly realized what he meant.
The ambush wasn’t random.
It was designed.
Layered.
Precise.
A kill box meant to trap them from both sides.
One soldier stared at Eli in disbelief.
“You figured that out in seconds?”
Eli didn’t answer.
His eyes kept moving constantly.
Watching.
Calculating.
Then suddenly—
He froze.
“There.”
Cole followed his gaze toward a narrow cliff opening high above the ridge.
At first, it looked like shadow.
Then movement.
A hidden sniper position.
Watching the retreat path.
Eli’s face hardened instantly.
“They’re waiting for us to run.”
Cole grabbed his rifle tighter.
“So what do we do?”
The young private answered quietly:
“We stop following their pattern.”
Another explosion shook the canyon behind them.
Dust and smoke swallowed the road.
The radio operator screamed into comms for extraction but only static answered back.
No support.
No air cover.
Completely isolated.
Panic began spreading through the squad again.
Then Eli pointed toward the canyon wall.
“There’s an old irrigation tunnel behind those rocks.”
Several soldiers looked confused.
“How the hell would you know that?”
Eli hesitated.
Too long.
Then answered softly:
“Because this valley was used before.”
Cole stared at him sharply.
“What does that mean?”
Eli ignored the question.
Instead, he grabbed smoke grenades from a fallen pack.
“If we retreat normally, we die.”
The gunfire above intensified.
The enemy knew exactly where they were pinned.
Eli pulled the pin from the first grenade.
“So we disappear.”
Seconds later—
Smoke exploded across the canyon floor.
The squad sprinted toward the hidden tunnel entrance while bullets tore through the empty position they had just abandoned.
Cole barely made it inside before another explosion collapsed part of the canyon behind them.
Darkness swallowed the tunnel.
Heavy breathing echoed through the narrow underground passage.
One wounded soldier finally whispered:
“Who are you, Mercer?”
The question hung in the darkness.
Eli stayed silent.
Then the radio crackled unexpectedly.
Not static this time.
A voice.
Cold.
Calm.
Waiting.
“…Iron Feather.”
Every soldier froze.
Cole’s eyes widened instantly.
Nobody in the squad knew that name.
But Eli did.
Because his face lost all color.
The voice continued through the radio:
“We finally found you.”
Silence consumed the tunnel.
The wounded soldiers looked between each other nervously.
Cole slowly turned toward Eli.
“What the hell is Iron Feather?”
Eli’s breathing became uneven for the first time all day.
Then, deep inside the tunnel ahead of them—
a light suddenly switched on.
Not natural light.
Artificial.
Old military floodlights flickering awake underground.
The squad stared into the darkness in horror.
Because buried beneath the canyon…
someone had already been waiting for them.
