PART 2: The Mark Beneath the Jacket
Cold fluorescent lights buzzed softly through the military reception office while complete silence settled across the room.
The young soldier behind the desk stared at the faded black tattoo stretching across the woman’s scarred collarbone.
His breathing slowed.
Because now he recognized it.
The numbers.
The symbol.
The burned wings surrounding the faded military insignia.
Not just a tattoo.
A classified combat mark.
Nearby soldiers slowly stood from their desks trying to see more clearly beneath the bright office lights.
The high-ranking female officer stopped directly beside the scarred woman.
Her posture immediately straightened.
Respect.
Real respect.
“Captain West…”
The woman calmly pulled the military jacket back over her shoulder.
But it was already too late.
Everyone had seen the scars.
Thin knife marks.
Burn burns.
Old bullet wounds crossing her skin beneath the faded tattoo.
The young soldier swallowed nervously.
“I—I didn’t realize who she was, ma’am.”
The officer’s cold eyes shifted toward him instantly.
“No,” she answered quietly.
“You didn’t.”
The room remained frozen.
Even the keyboard typing had stopped completely now.
The officer slowly looked back toward the woman standing silently beside the desk.
For one long second—
neither woman spoke.
Then quietly—
“You disappeared after Raven Sector.”
Captain West’s expression never changed.
“So did most of my unit.”
A heavy silence crushed the office.
Because every soldier in the room knew that name.
Raven Sector.
The mission nobody officially discussed.
The operation buried beneath military secrecy for nearly fifteen years.
One nervous private whispered softly from across the room.
“…I thought Raven Sector was a training accident.”
Captain West slowly turned her eyes toward him.
Cold.
Steady.
Exhausted.
“That’s what they told the public.”
The high-ranking officer lowered her gaze briefly.
Almost guilty.
Then suddenly—
an older Master Sergeant standing near the back office stepped forward into the light.
The moment he saw Captain West’s face—
he froze completely.
Color drained from his expression.
“No…”
His voice cracked.
The room turned toward him.
The Master Sergeant stared at her like he had seen a ghost.
“You were on Extraction Team Seven.”
Captain West nodded once.
The older soldier’s eyes filled instantly with emotion.
“They said nobody survived the tunnel collapse.”
The office fell silent again.
Then slowly—
Captain West reached into her jacket pocket and removed an old metal dog tag.
Burned black around the edges.
Bent nearly in half.
She placed it carefully onto the reception desk.
The young soldier looked down at the engraved name.
SERGEANT TYLER REED.
The Master Sergeant’s knees nearly gave out.
“My brother…”
Captain West’s tired eyes softened slightly for the first time.
“He saved six men before the fire reached the tunnels.”
Silence.
“He died getting us out.”
The older soldier covered his mouth with trembling hands while emotion broke across his hardened face.
Around the office—
young soldiers stood frozen beneath the cold white lights.
Because standing in front of them wasn’t just some woman wearing an old military jacket.
She was Captain Evelyn West.
The only surviving officer from Raven Sector.
A soldier officially listed as dead.
A ghost buried beneath classified reports and forgotten medals.
The young receptionist slowly lowered his eyes in shame.
Captain West calmly picked up the dog tags again before sliding them back into her pocket.
Then quietly—
she looked toward the high-ranking officer beside her.
“I’m here because someone reopened Raven Sector.”
The officer’s face tightened instantly.
Fear.
Real fear.
Captain West’s voice dropped lower.
“And if those files are active again…”
She glanced slowly around the silent office.
“…then somebody made a very dangerous mistake.”
And beneath the cold fluorescent lights of the military reception office—
every soldier suddenly understood something terrifying.
The war Captain West survived…
might not be over after all.
