PART 2: The Princess Beneath the Iron Mask
The cathedral stood frozen beneath the trembling candlelight.
Nobody moved.
Nobody dared breathe.
The groom stared at the princess with pure horror spreading across his face.
His hands shook violently while the heavy iron helmet slipped from his fingers—
CLANG.
The sound crashed across the stone floor beneath the towering arches.
Royal guests recoiled in fear.
One nobleman crossed himself.
Another woman buried her face into her husband’s shoulder.
Even the choir had fallen silent.
Only the distant crackle of candles remained.
The princess still stood motionless in her white gown.
Head slightly lowered.
Long golden hair cascading across the silver embroidery of her dress.
But her face—
hidden from everyone except the groom.
Then slowly—
tears filled the young man’s eyes.
Not disgust.
Not hatred.
Something far more painful.
Grief.
The king closed his eyes heavily beside the altar.
Like he had witnessed this moment before.
Many times.
The groom stepped backward again.
Voice barely escaping him.
“Who… did this to you?”
A wave of whispers spread through the cathedral instantly.
The princess finally moved.
Slowly.
Carefully.
She lifted trembling fingers toward the side of her face—
still hidden from the crowd.
And for the first time—
she spoke.
“It was never a who.”
Her voice sounded soft.
Broken.
Beautiful.
The cathedral listened in complete silence.
“It was fire.”
Shock spread across the royal guests.
The king’s jaw tightened with visible pain.
The princess stared downward while tears slipped quietly onto her white gloves.
“When I was nine… the northern palace burned.”
The orchestral musicians lowered their instruments silently nearby.
“I survived.”
A trembling breath escaped her lips.
“But my face did not.”
Silence crushed the cathedral.
Several guests slowly lowered their heads in shame.
Because suddenly—
the iron helmet no longer looked terrifying.
It looked tragic.
The groom’s breathing became uneven.
Still staring at the unseen scars before him.
Then quietly—
the princess whispered the words she feared most.
“You don’t have to marry me.”
The king looked away completely.
Unable to watch anymore.
For years—
princes, dukes, and noblemen had walked away after seeing her face.
Some screamed.
Some fainted.
Others simply fled.
The kingdom called her cursed.
The Iron Princess.
But then—
something unexpected happened.
The groom stepped forward.
The entire cathedral froze again.
He moved slowly toward her beneath the sea of candlelight.
Eyes still wet with tears.
Not fear anymore.
Understanding.
The princess trembled softly as he reached out.
Then gently—
he took her shaking hands into his own.
Gasps echoed through the cathedral.
The groom’s voice cracked emotionally.
“You thought the scars were the monster.”
Tears rolled down his face now.
“But the cruelest thing here…”
He looked toward the horrified nobles surrounding them.
“…was what they made you hide.”
The princess broke instantly.
Years of loneliness.
Shame.
Pain.
Collapsing behind trembling breaths and silent tears.
The groom carefully removed his royal cloak from his shoulders.
Then wrapped it gently around her.
Protecting her from the staring eyes filling the cathedral.
One elderly queen near the front pew quietly began crying.
Even hardened royal guards lowered their gaze respectfully.
The king stared at the young man in disbelief.
“Why?” he whispered.
The groom looked toward the broken princess standing before him.
Then answered softly—
“Because she spent her whole life hiding from people who never deserved to see her anyway.”
Complete silence followed.
Warm candlelight flickered across the ancient stone walls while the princess quietly buried her face against his chest for the first time in years.
Not hiding.
Healing.
And standing together beneath the glowing cathedral—
the kingdom finally realized something unforgettable.
The iron helmet was never protecting the world from the princess.
It was protecting the princess from the world.
