Rain poured heavily through the narrow alley as Mr. Vale stood frozen beside his car, staring at the silver half-moon pendant hanging from the little boy’s neck.
His breathing became uneven.
Because six years earlier—
he buried the matching half beside the grave of a woman he once loved more than anything.
Elena.
The woman everyone claimed died in a terrible accident while carrying his unborn child.
The maid slowly lowered her eyes, tears mixing with the rain on her face.
“I tried,” she whispered shakily.
The frightened children clung tighter to her coat.
Mr. Vale could barely speak.
The little boy looked up innocently.
“Mom… why is he crying?”
The question shattered him.
Because the child’s eyes looked exactly like his own.
Mr. Vale slowly knelt in the rain, unable to stop staring at the pendant.
“Where did you get this?” he asked softly.
The little boy touched it carefully.
“My mommy says it belonged to my dad.”
The world around Mr. Vale suddenly felt distant.
Cars passed somewhere beyond the alley.
Thunder rolled overhead.
The Debt That Set Them Free
But none of it mattered anymore.
He slowly looked back toward the woman he once failed to recognize.
“Elena…”
She finally lifted her tear-filled eyes toward him.
“I was told you wanted us gone,” she whispered. “Your father paid people to make sure we disappeared.”
Shock crashed across his face.
Because his father hated Elena from the beginning.
Hated her background.
Hated her poverty.
Hated the child she carried.
Mr. Vale’s hands trembled violently.
“All these years…” he whispered.
Elena nodded painfully.
“I cleaned your offices every night while raising your children alone.”
Children.
Plural.
Mr. Vale froze again.
Slowly, the little girl stepped from behind Elena’s coat.
Same dark hair.
Same eyes.
His knees nearly gave out beneath him.
Because he didn’t lose one child six years ago.
He lost both.
The Fall That Changed Everything
The little boy tugged gently on his sleeve.
“You’re not a bad man?”
Mr. Vale looked at the terrified children standing barefoot in the rain.
Then at the woman forced to hide from him just to survive.
And something inside him finally broke completely.
He removed his expensive coat and wrapped it carefully around both children.
“No,” he whispered through tears.
“But I should’ve found you sooner.”
