PART 2: The Little Girl Carried Her Baby Brother Alone
The entire Briar Glen Police Department fell silent.
Deputy Evan Hollis stared into the worn paper bag with disbelief frozen across his face.
Inside—
a newborn baby lay wrapped in an old towel, barely moving from the cold.
A soft gasp spread through the station.
Officers rushed forward instantly.
“Oh my God…”
The baby’s tiny hands trembled weakly while the little girl clutched the bag tighter.
“Please,” she whispered again through tears, “save my brother first.”
Deputy Hollis carefully lifted the newborn into his arms while paramedics were called immediately.
The little girl looked exhausted.
Barefoot.
Shivering.
Completely alone.
Hollis knelt beside her gently.
“What’s your name, sweetheart?”
“Emma.”
“And how far did you walk?”
The little girl lowered her eyes.
“From the highway motel.”
One officer’s face changed instantly.
The motel sat nearly four miles away.
In the freezing rain.
The entire station grew quiet again.
“Where’s your mother?” Hollis asked softly.
Emma’s lips trembled.
“She wouldn’t wake up.”
The words hit harder than anyone expected.
Several officers closed their eyes painfully.
Emma wiped tears from her cheeks with dirty sleeves.
“I tried shaking her,” she whispered. “But my baby brother wouldn’t stop crying.”
Deputy Hollis felt his chest tighten.
Because somehow this tiny child made the impossible decision no adult around her could make.
She saved her brother alone.
Paramedics rushed through the station doors moments later and carefully checked the newborn.
One medic looked toward Hollis in shock.
“He’s alive because she brought him here.”
Emma sat silently in the corner clutching the torn handles of the empty paper bag.
Still shaking.
Still terrified.
Deputy Hollis slowly walked over and wrapped his jacket gently around her shoulders.
“You did good tonight,” he said softly.
The little girl finally looked up at him.
“Is he safe now?”
Hollis smiled through tears.
“Yes,” he whispered. “Because of you.”
But before anyone could say another word—
a patrol officer suddenly rushed into the station holding a motel registry sheet.
His face had gone completely pale.
“Deputy…”
Hollis looked up immediately.
The officer swallowed hard.
“The woman at the motel…”
He glanced toward Emma.
“…she used to work here.”
