PART 2: Deputy Ryan Realizes What Emma Brought Isn’t Safe
The radio crackled violently the moment Ryan’s shout echoed through the station.
“Dispatch, respond—possible critical situation at Springfield PD!”
Emma flinched at the sudden noise, clutching the paper bag tighter against her chest.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I didn’t know where else to go…”
Ryan didn’t take his eyes off the bag.
Whatever was inside wasn’t just alarming.
It was wrong.
The kind of wrong you feel before you understand it.
Another officer rushed in from the back hallway, hand already on his holster. “Ryan? What’s—”
“Don’t open it,” Ryan cut in sharply.
The officer froze mid-step.
Emma looked up, terrified now. “He said I had to bring it here… or they would find me too.”
Ryan lowered his voice immediately, trying to steady her again. “Who said that, Emma?”
Her hands trembled harder.
“The man in the car.”
A silence fell so heavy it felt physical.
Outside the station windows, headlights appeared across the street.
Not passing.
Stopping.
One vehicle.
Then another behind it.
Ryan’s hand moved slowly toward his radio. “All units—possible containment issue at front entrance.”
But before he could finish—
The paper bag shifted.
Something inside moved.
Emma let out a small gasp and stepped backward.
Ryan reacted instantly, pulling her behind him and raising his voice toward the second officer.
“LOCK THE FRONT DOOR!”
The officer spun—but it was too late.
The glass doors of the station creaked open on their own.
Cold night air spilled inside.
And a man stepped into the fluorescent light.
So calm it made everything worse.
He looked at Emma first.
Then at the bag.
And smiled faintly.
“Good,” he said softly. “You found the right place.”
Ryan’s hand tightened on his weapon instantly.
“Step back,” he warned.
But the man didn’t.
He tilted his head slightly, as if listening.
Then added, almost gently—
“You don’t understand what she’s carrying.”
