PART 2: The Name That Broke the Silence
The rain softened, but Nicholas didn’t move.
The name “Rose Elena Carter” echoed in his mind like something long buried suddenly brought back to life.
He stared at the little girl again, searching her face as if reality itself had shifted.
“Rose…” he whispered once more, almost afraid to believe it.
The child tilted her head slightly.
“Do you know me?” she asked innocently.
Nicholas’s throat tightened.
For a moment, he couldn’t answer.
Because that name… wasn’t just familiar.
It belonged to the only person who ever treated him like he was more than money, status, or a surname.
A memory surfaced—warm hands breaking bread in half, just like she did… just like this child did.
Nicholas slowly stood up, his legs unsteady.
“Where is your mother?” he asked quietly.
The little girl looked down at the wet ground.
“She said she will come back… but she never did.”
Silence fell between them.
Only the rain answered.
Nicholas’s hands curled tightly as emotion built inside him.
“No…” he said under his breath. “That can’t be…”
The girl reached into her pocket and pulled out a small folded photograph.
Nicholas took it with shaking fingers.
And froze completely.
It was her.
The woman he once loved.
The woman he thought had left him forever.
Holding this same child.
Nicholas stepped back as if the ground had disappeared beneath him.
“She didn’t leave you,” he whispered painfully. “She was taken from me before I could find her again.”
The little girl blinked.
“Taken?”
Nicholas looked toward the dark road beyond the estate gates.
His voice dropped.
“Yes… and I think I finally know who did it.”
The rain grew heavier.
And for the first time in years…
Nicholas was no longer just a broken man outside his own home.
He was a man about to uncover a truth that had been hidden behind silence, wealth, and time.
