PART 2: The Picture Hidden for Years

The snow seemed to fall heavier after those words.

The homeless woman stared at the little girl, her breath shaking as if the cold had suddenly become unbearable.

“What… did you say?” she whispered.

The child hugged herself inside the bright yellow coat, her voice soft but certain.

“Daddy keeps your picture in a box,” she repeated. “He looks at it when he thinks I’m sleeping.”

The woman’s lips parted, but no sound came out.

Her mind struggled to catch up with what she was hearing.

A picture… kept safe… after all these years?

She slowly leaned forward, as if afraid the child might disappear.

“What is your father’s name?” she asked carefully.

The little girl looked down at the snow-covered ground.

“Arjun.”

The name hit like a quiet explosion.

The woman’s entire body went still.

Years ago, that name had been everything to her—home, safety, future… before life broke it into silence.

She closed her eyes tightly.

“I thought he forgot me,” she whispered.

The child shook her head immediately.

“No,” she said. “He never says your name, but I saw him crying once. He thought I wasn’t watching.”

The woman’s hands trembled uncontrollably now.

The Debt That Set Them Free

She had survived the streets, winters like this, nights without food… but nothing had prepared her for this moment.

A child standing in front of her carrying pieces of a life she thought was gone forever.

Slowly, she reached out her hand toward the girl.

“Where is he now?” she asked softly.

The child pointed down the street.

“At home. He said not to talk to strangers… but I think you are not a stranger.”

The woman gave a broken smile through tears.

Because she knew.

Some people don’t stay strangers forever.

Sometimes…

they just get lost in time.
