PART 2: The Boy Remembered the Truth Hidden for Years
The dim room became unbearably quiet.
No one moved.
No one even breathed.
The frightened boy stood frozen in the center of the room, staring down at the small silver compass resting in his trembling hand.
Its surface was scratched and worn with age.
But the moment his fingers touched it…
memories crashed into him like shattered glass.
A burning house.
Rain against broken windows.
A woman screaming his name.
And the man standing across the room—
watching it all happen.
The boy’s breathing turned uneven.
The calm young girl beside him stepped back silently, her expression filled with sadness rather than fear.
Across the room, the older man staggered backward.
“No…” he whispered. “You were never supposed to remember.”
The boy slowly lifted his eyes toward him.
Tears filled them now.
Not from confusion anymore.
From truth.
“You left my mother there,” he said softly.
The words struck the room harder than a gunshot.
The man’s face drained completely of color.
For years, he had carefully built a lie around the boy’s life.
Changed records.
Moved cities.
Even changed the child’s name.
Everything to bury one terrible night forever.
But now the memories were returning.
All because of the compass.
The young girl crossed her arms quietly. “You told him his mother abandoned him.”
The man looked desperate now. “I was protecting him!”
“No,” the boy whispered. “You were protecting yourself.”
His voice no longer sounded frightened.
It sounded broken.
And that was worse.
The man’s breathing became shaky. “You don’t understand what happened that night.”
But the memories were becoming clearer every second.
The boy saw the fire again.
Saw his mother trapped upstairs.
Saw the man pulling him outside while she screamed for help.
Then came the memory he buried deepest of all.
The promise.
“Go back for her!”
The boy’s voice cracked as he repeated the words from years ago.
The man covered his face briefly, unable to look at him anymore.
“I tried,” he whispered weakly.
But the young girl shook her head slowly.
“You locked the door.”
Silence crushed the room.
The boy stared at the man in horror.
Because suddenly he remembered the final detail.
The sound of the deadbolt clicking shut.
Not by accident.
On purpose.
The man collapsed into a chair trembling violently.
“She found out what I did,” he muttered. “She was going to tell everyone.”
The boy’s entire body went numb.
The woman who died in that fire…
didn’t die because of the flames.
She died because someone made sure she couldn’t escape.
The young girl stepped closer to the boy gently.
“You were never crazy,” she whispered. “Your memories were stolen from you.”
The man looked up suddenly, panic filling his eyes again.
“How did you even find the compass?”
The girl’s expression turned cold for the first time.
“Your wife gave it to me before she disappeared.”
The room froze.
Because according to the man…
his wife had been dead for three years.
