PART 2: The Hunt That Didn’t End Twice

The engines didn’t fade.

They built.

Rolling across the desert like thunder that refused to pass.

Bear stepped outside, eyes scanning the horizon like he already knew where this would end.

“Stay inside,” he told the girl.

She shook her head, small but stubborn. “Bring her back.”

He held her gaze for a second.

Then nodded once.

The riders came fast.

Dust trails cutting through heatwaves, bikes lining the broken asphalt like a storm gathering shape.

No one asked questions.

They heard the name.

That was enough.

“Declan Mercer,” one of them muttered.

“Thought we buried him.”

Bear’s voice dropped. “We didn’t finish it.”

They rode hard.

No slowing.

No hesitation.

The desert blurred past them until—

The Debt That Set Them Free

Tracks.

Fresh.

Cutting off the highway.

They followed.

Quiet now.

Focused.

The hunt had begun.

The building stood alone.

Half-collapsed.

Forgotten.

Perfect for someone who didn’t want to be found.

Bear didn’t wait.

The door slammed open under his shoulder.

Inside—

darkness.

Then a voice.

“Still chasing ghosts?”

Declan stepped forward, smiling like nothing had ever touched him.

Behind him—

a woman tied to a chair.

The Fall That Changed Everything

Bruised.

Barely conscious.

Alive.

Everything inside Bear went still.

Not rage.

Not chaos.

Something colder.

Final.

“You should’ve stayed dead,” Bear said.

Declan laughed. “You should’ve let it go.”

He didn’t.

The fight wasn’t long.

It wasn’t loud.

It was inevitable.

When it ended—

Declan didn’t get back up.

Bear didn’t look at him again.

Didn’t need to.

He cut the ropes.

The woman slumped forward, breath shaking.

“…my daughter…” she whispered.

“She’s waiting,” he said.

The ride back was different.

Engines softer.

Not hunting anymore.

Returning.

The girl ran before the bikes even stopped.

Straight into her mother’s arms.

Holding on like the world had almost taken everything—and failed.

Bear watched from a distance.

Silent.

Still.

Because this time—

the hunt didn’t just end.

It finished.
